Suzi and Nick Cooper moved to Theberton to launch their boarding cattery and after eight years of planning and preparation Hotel Catifornia opened in June 2016. More on the pens and construction under The Pens. Suzi is a qualified medical secretary working the NHS and private sector for many years. She has owned cats all her life and has a deep understanding and experience. This year she is embarking on a diploma course including topics such as anatomy and physiology, first aid, nutrition and cat psychology to enhance her knowledge. Having worked in the NHS she has a good understanding of the necessities for policies and protocols and this is just as important when looking after other people’s pets. Nick is a self employed business analyst specialising in data protection. As a very practical man he provides the extra pair of hands during busy periods and help with maintenance and any repairs. Being self employed, both Nick and Suzi know how a good business should be managed. Suzi does all the paperwork and accounts and they use an excellent software package to manage the bookings and clients. They are very proud of Hotel Catifornia, especially the wonderful reviews about the standard of care they offer their guests and the very recent award of a 5 star licence under the new DEFRA Animal Welfare requirements. Sharing the household are their own three cats, Tallulah, Bobby and Midnight Sox plus two border collies Barney and Finn (not allowed in the cattery!) and the four hens Helga, Henrietta, Heidi and Hermione, whose run backs on to the cattery providing Pen 8 with great cat TV.
Joan Harvey, our near neighbour, is our key holder. When we opened in 2016 we held a party and Joan, having an excellent sense of occasion and as a local councillor, donned Ascot hat and opened Hotel Catifornia officially complete with ribbon cutting. She has often helped out feeding the guests or manning the phones at busy times.
Nicola came to housesit in the Autumn to look after our pets while we were away. So impressed were we with her professionalism we invited her to train to run the cattery for us when on leave in future. We have become so busy that we were turning down bookings in order to get away.
“I am an animal lover and professional pet sitter covering the Suffolk area. I have several years experience caring for a variety of pets; three years working with an animal charity, long term pet sitting and dog walking as well as helping my family with their two Shar Pei dogs. In my spare time I enjoy yoga, meditation and off the beaten track travel.”
Susie Murray lives across the road and joined us last summer to help with cleaning. She first came to me for work experience when still at school and I knew she would be willing and able to help us during really busy periods. We operate a very strict cleaning policy here so we needed someone who was quick to learn.
